In Year 6, our teacher is Mrs Thomas. Our teaching assistants are Mrs O’Keeffe and Miss Smith.

When we arrive in school, we start the day with a morning task, which is normally English or Maths based. Every morning, we have English and Maths lessons. We also complete reading and spelling activities. We enjoy reading and we use ‘Reading Plus’ three times a week, which helps to improve our reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary skills. We complete a range of reading activities during the week, including whole class reading sessions and reading comprehension tasks. To develop quick recall of multiplication facts, which is an important skill, we use ‘Times Table Rock Stars’.

The afternoons are when we do a range of other subjects including Science, Computing, History, Geography, R.E, Art, Design Technology, Music, French, PSHE and P.E. Our P.E. kit consists of a plain white T-shirt, plain shorts, tracksuit bottoms or leggings and trainers. A school jumper or cardigan can also be worn to keep warm as the temperature becomes cooler. Children should come to school dressed in their P.E. kit on a Friday.

Home learning helps us to practise skills we are learning in our lessons. It is extremely important that every child tries to complete their home learning to the best of their ability as this will prepare them well for secondary school. Our home learning day is Friday, and it will alternate between Maths and English tasks. This needs to be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday. We also get a spelling pattern every Monday for a quiz the following Friday.

Times tables are an essential part of the Year 6 curriculum and by the end of Year 4, children should confidently know their times tables and associated division facts up to 12 x 12.

In Year Six, we also go on a very exciting week-long trip to a residential centre. Children will have the opportunity to take on lots of responsibilities in Year 6. They are positive role models to the younger children, and they strive to do their best in all that they do.
