Year 5

Year 5 home learning timetable

Any questions please email Mr Greenfield on p.greenfield125@middlestonemoor.durham.sch.uk

In Year 5 our teacher is Mr Greenfield and our teaching assistant is Mrs O’Keeffe.

After we arrive in school, during register time, we do a morning task to get our brains warmed up for learning. This could be either a maths, grammar or handwriting task.

We have English and Maths lessons every morning. We also have reading and spelling activities before lunch too. We love to read and we regularly use ‘Reading Plus’. This is a fantastic computer programme which really helps to improve our reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Every week we challenge ourselves to improve our arithmetic and times tables knowledge. Quick maths skills are really important so we practise times tables every day so that we know all the facts really well.

Assembly is at 10:15am, followed by playtime. There is a rota for football or you can play with small equipment on the yard or challenge yourself on our fun trim trail. Some children just enjoy chatting to their friends and that’s fine too! In the summer we go on the field and enjoy playing with the outdoor play equipment. You can also pay a small amount of money to join the fruit scheme or you can bring your own fruit from home.

During the afternoon we learn about a variety of other things, including Science, Art, DT, Geography, History, Music, French, ICT and RE. Sometimes we combine our subjects which really helps to support our learning. For example, when learning about the ancient Maya civilisation in history we can then apply this knowledge in ICT and produce a PowerPoint presentation.

We like to keep ourselves healthy in PE lessons. We also participate in ‘Fit for Life’ sessions and ‘Go Noodle’ throughout the week. This is really fun and gets the heart pumping! Over the year we cover a range of sports, including sessions with specialist coaches. There are also different clubs after school that we can take part in.

Home Learning helps us to practise skills that we are learning in school. We take our English and Maths skills books home on a Friday and bring them back to school on Wednesday. We do Maths skills one week and then English skills the following week. We also have Home Learning investigation books that we take home every day. In this book, we have handwriting practice, times tables tasks and spelling investigation instructions. Instead of having a list of words that we need to learn, we have a specific spelling pattern and we learn how to use that pattern by investigating words in books, magazines, web pages and out in the environment.

We also have a reading book and a reading record book that we bring to school every day. Every time we read, a parent signs the book and then, when we have read seventy times, we can choose a special book to keep.

Every Thursday afternoon, we have a whole class instrumental music lesson. Some of us learn brass instruments and others learn the clarinet. These lessons are taken by Durham Music Service teachers. They are great fun!

We are a very friendly class and we like to help and support each other. Sometimes, on a Friday afternoon, we have a ‘Family Group’ get-together. If we have a brother or a sister in the school we get the chance to share a classroom with them. During this time we participate in different activities. Good manners, kindness, generosity and positivity is always in encouraged in year 5 and we always try to do our best!
