Year 4

Y4 home learning timetable

Any questions please email Mrs Bowden on l.bowden200@middlestonemoor.durham.sch.uk

Mrs. Bowden

In Year 4 our teacher is called Mrs Bowden and the teaching assistant is Miss Smith. Mrs Baker teaches the class every Friday.

We learn about some exciting topics in Year 4 which cover a range of curriculum areas and also enjoy linking some of our learning to interesting texts such as ‘ Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’.

After register, we begin every day with Maths.  We have three assemblies each week which begin at 10 am.  Morning break is at 10.30 am and after break we have started to do a programme called ‘Fit For Life’. We do this every day and it is aimed at improving  our overall fitness ( teachers too!) and includes different high energy exercises. Each session is 15 minutes long.

At break, children can choose to join the fruit scheme (which gives them a piece of  fruit each morning) or they can bring their own fruit from home as we encourage healthy eating in our school.

After ‘Fit For Life’ we do English every day and then another lesson usually Reading or Spelling before lunch.

In Key Stage 2, lunch begins at 12.15pm and ends at 1.10 pm. After lunch we do learning relating to other curriculum areas which are History, Geography, French, Science, Computing, PSHE, R.E., Art and Design, Music and PE.

PE is sometimes outdoors and this year, we have been enjoying following a new exciting programme called Commando Joe  which involves the children developing their problem solving and communication skills through participating in different tasks.

My class will go swimming in the Summer Term this year on Wednesday afternoons.

Every day the children read and we have whole class reading now instead of guided group reading sessions. This is usually relating to our class text.  This year we have enjoyed reading  ‘Charlotte’s Web’, ‘The Firework-Maker’s Daughter’, Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ and ‘ The Mousehole Cat’. Also as well as reading we regular practise our spellings. Each week we address a spelling pattern and during the week the children are encouraged to collect words which include that particular pattern. A short test is then given on Fridays. We also have multiplication and division facts to practise weekly to keep us on our toes with our times table knowledge!

As well as the Spelling Investigation book, children are given a task to complete each  which at home which  covers areas taught during the week in Maths or English. This is given out each Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday.

In Year 4 we learn to play a musical instrument. This year, Miss Leggitt and Miss Unwin from Durham Music Service, will be teaching the class to play either a baritone, clarinet or trumpet. They also teach fun songs and musical activities in their lesson each Thursday afternoon.
