In Reception we continue to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and learn through play based experiences.

Reception children have their own entrance and cloakroom. They are able to arrive at school from 8.50am to begin the school day at 9.00am. After the register each morning we start the day with ‘Squiggle While You Wiggle’, which is a movement program aimed at developing the children’s ability to make the movements required when writing letters of the alphabet. We also take part in a ‘Dough Disco’ during the day, which supports the children in strengthening their children’s fingers. The children then spend the rest of the morning taking part in both Literacy and Mathematics activities as well as activities of their own choosing.

In the afternoon the children will have the opportunity to experience activities related to our theme for the week or following up on their own particular areas of interest. We always finish our day with a whole class story and singing session.

Wednesday afternoons are our forest school afternoon. We spend the afternoon exploring outdoors within our school grounds, learning about the environment and experiencing activities which challenge our ability to work as a team and develop resilience.

The children in our Early Years Unit enjoy a variety of learning both indoors and outdoors. Our indoor environment is organised into areas to support the children’s learning, including sand, water, playdough, role play, book nook and graphics table. Outside we have a sheltered outdoor area as well as mud kitchen, pebble pits, a water cascade and den area. As children love to be outdoors in all types of weather, we also have a well-stocked wellie area and full body waterproofs for wet or messy play.
