In Year 5 our teacher is Mrs Carter and our teaching assistant is Mrs Akester.
First thing in a morning, we either do Wake Up, Shake up exercises or calming exercises to help us respect our right to be healthy. During the register time, we do a quick grammar task and a maths task to get our brains warmed up for learning.
We have English and Maths lessons every morning. We also have reading and spelling activities before lunch too – we love to read and share a wide variety of texts in Year 5 to improve our skills.
Assembly is at 10:15am followed by playtime. There is a rota for football or you can play with small equipment on the yard or challenge yourself on our fun trim trail. Some children just enjoy chatting to their friends and that’s fine too! In the summer we go on the field and enjoy playing with the outdoor play equipment. You can also pay a small amount of money to join the fruit scheme or you can bring your own fruit from home.
During the afternoon we learn about a variety of other things, including Science, Art, DT, Geography, History, Music, French, ICT and RE. This autumn term our topic is ‘Life Cycles’ and ‘Space’ with the big question – What shapes my world? In the Spring and Summer terms our topics will be ‘Around the World in 80 days’ and ‘Food’.
As our English learning this term is closely linked to our topics, we have two class novels that we are reading and enjoying together – ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar and ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce.
Every week we challenge ourselves to improve our arithmetic and times tables knowledge. Quick maths skills are really important so we practise times tables every day so that we know all the facts really well.
Another way of keeping ourselves healthy is to take part in PE lessons. Over the year we cover a range of sports, including sessions with specialist coaches. There are also different clubs after school that we can take part in.
Home Learning helps us to practise skills that we are learning in school. We take our English and Maths skills books home on a Friday and bring them back to school on Wednesday. We do Maths skills one week and then English skills the following week. We also have Home Learning investigation books that we take home every day. In this book, we have handwriting practice, times tables tasks and spelling investigation instructions. Instead of having a list of words that we need to learn, we have a specific spelling pattern and we learn how to use that pattern by investigating words in books, magazines, web pages and out in the environment. We then have a quiz on a Friday where we could be asked any word that uses that spelling pattern – some of them are really tricky!
We also have a reading book and a reading record book that we bring to school every day. Every time we read, a parent signs the book and then, when we have read seventy times, we can choose special book to keep.
Every Thursday afternoon, we have a whole class instrumental music lesson. Some of us learn brass instruments and others learn the clarinet. These lessons are taken by Durham Music Service teachers.
