In Year 4 our teacher is called Mrs Bowden.
We learn about some exciting topics in Year 4 including ‘The Stone Age’ and ‘The Ancient Egyptians.’
Every day we do English and Maths. Each week, in Maths, we do a Written Mental Arithmetic test.
After register, each morning, we start the day with ‘Wake up, Shake up’. An aerobic routine designed to wake us all up and get everyone ready for a fun day of learning!
Assembly for Year 4 is at 10.10 am. Morning break is at 10.30 am after assembly. Hymn practise and Family Group meetings are held on alternate Fridays. Also we celebrate children’s learning in Good Learning assembly which is held on a Monday and Family Star assembly on a Tuesday which awards different children who have been respecting their rights that week.
At break, children can choose to join the fruit scheme (which gives them a piece of fruit each morning break for a small price) or they can bring their own fruit from home as we encourage healthy eating in our school.
Lunch is at 12.15pm and after lunch we usually do learning relating to our current topic as well as learning in other subjects including History, Geography, French, Science, Computing PSHE, R.E., Art and Design and Music.
At the moment, Autumn Term, P.E. in my class is on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings. We even get to go swimming on Fridays up until Christmas. Please check our newsletters for any changes as the days usually change each term.
Spelling Investigation books continue to be sent home each Monday which contain a particular spelling pattern to practise throughout the week at home and at school. The children have to collect different words with this spelling pattern each day until Friday when they will be tested on 10 random words following this rule. Also the children are given different times table and division facts to practise each week and every Friday they have a timed times table test to help them improve their recall. At the end of Year 4 there will soon be a National Test to assess children with their times table knowledge so any practise they have, both at school and at home, will help them achieve their potential. There is also a section in this book to practise different handwriting joins to improve fluency.
As well as the Spelling Investigation book, children are given a task to complete each which usually covers areas taught during the week in Maths or English. In Year 4 it is given out each Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday.
We are trying a different approach to reading this year and doing more whole class reading instead of guided reading groups each day. We cover lots of interesting texts to inspire our writing in Year 4 including ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’. However, we still do some paired and guided reading as well. We even get to borrow a book from the school library on a regular basis. Each child also has a reading record and reading book which they should bring to school every day. Reading records are collected in on Tuesdays in my class. Please sign the reading record each time your child reads as when they have read 70 times they will be able to choose a book of their very own!
In Year 4 we learn to play a musical instrument. This year, Miss Leggitt and Miss Unwin from Durham Music Service, will be teaching the class to play either a baritone, clarinet or trumpet. They also teach fun songs and musical activities in their lesson each Thursday afternoon.
Mathletics is also an important part of Maths home learning. Most weeks tasks are set and children even sometimes get time to complete them in school time. The challenge for every child is to aim to get 1000 points each week by completing tasks. Whenever they achieve this, they receive a certificate in school. We understand how some people do not have internet access at home so a club for children who don’t have the internet can have a chance to earn points during Friday lunch time.
Mrs Sains teaches my class on a Friday this year.
