Welcome to Year 3 (Key Stage 2)
In Year 3 our teacher is Ms. Luke and our teaching assistant during the week is Mrs. Conlon. We also have learning support from Miss. Smith, our apprentice teaching assistant several times a week.
We start the day with a morning starter to get us settled in the mode to learn. Our morning challenge is displayed on the board and may be something like a handwriting task or some mental maths or puzzles to get our brains buzzing!
After our morning starter and registration we get ourselves energized with a dance activity or in the zone for learning with a mindfulness activity.
We are covering some exciting topics this year such as The Stone Age and The Ancient Egyptians.
In English we cover a range of genres and writing skills and link them to our class text. We learn how to use conjunctions, punctuation such as question marks, exclamation marks, commas, apostrophes and inverted commas.
We place high expectations on our handwriting and regularly practice our letter formation with joins. We make sure our learning is presented to the best of our ability every time and make sure we stick to the expectations in our presentation contracts in all subjects.
In Maths we learn different written methods to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. We will continue to look at number throughout the year but will also learn about shape, data handling and how we can use our mathematical skills to solve problems. Each week in maths we complete as arithmetic quiz and a timed multiplication quiz to make sure we are improving our quick recall of times tables which is vital in maths as we move up through school.
Most mornings we have assembly at 9.15am and hymn practice or Family Groups on alternate Fridays. Morning Break is at 10.30 am where we can socialise on the yard, play football or join in a dance activity in the hall. We also have the opportunity to enjoy a piece of fruit if part of the fruit scheme or one that we have brought in from home.
Lunch is at 12.15pm and we return to afternoon lessons at 1.10pm
We do PE twice a week and after Christmas, one of these sessions will be a swimming session until Easer.
We enjoy whole class reading sessions to improve our reading skills and develop skills like inference, deduction, retrieval and prediction. We can also take a book of our own choice from the school library once a week. Our class reading corner is a great place where we enjoying getting together to listen to and enjoy a good story. It’s nice too to share books and stories from home by authors who we enjoy so that we can spread our love of reading and give others ideas of which authors they might like to try.
After lunch our learning is related to science and our foundation subjects such as history, geography, music and PHSCE and computing. We also enjoy learning some simple conversational French as our modern foreign language, it’s tres bien!
In Year 3 we also learn to play a musical instrument. This year it is the recorder! We also learn fun songs and take part in musical activities.
On Thursday afternoon we are taught by Miss. Richardson and on Friday afternoon Mrs. Conlon takes our class.
